What purchases are approved for homeschooled children?

According to Ohio's legislation for the Afterschool child enrichment educational savings account, "If the student has been excused from the compulsory attendance law for the purpose of home instruction under section 3321.04 of the Revised Code, purchase of curriculum and materials;..."

  • Homeschoolers may purchase:
    • Learning curriculum (including books)
    • Learning materials: consumables i.e. supplies which are consumed, destroyed, or expended by the student in the process of use
    • Manipulatives: physical objects that are used as teaching tools to engage students in hands-on learning.
    • Individual pool and gym memberships are allowable if they are required for an eligible activity, such as an afterschool educational program or day camp, and purchased through a verified service provider. Family memberships for pool and gym access are not allowable ACE expenditures.

Note: STEM kits specifically designed for educational purposes are allowable for homeschooled students. While electronic devices (computers, tablets, and the like) are explicitly prohibited, basic electrical components such as lights, spin motors, circuit boards, and speakers are reimbursable as part of an educational STEM kit.
